The Rise of Donald Trump to Power in the USA will not have an immediate impact on the war in Ukraine. However, the newly elected President of America will expect a certain level of flexibility from Kyiv regarding peace negotiations. This was stated by former Finnish President Sauli Niinistö in an interview with Yle.
Previously, Trump has repeatedly expressed his intention to quickly end the war in Ukraine. These statements have raised concerns, as they lacked any specifics.
"I have not seen a more detailed plan on this matter, if there is one. We'll see what he actually intends to do. For now, the plan seems to boil down to just one suggestion," Niinistö notes.
According to the former Finnish president, Trump will likely exert pressure on both Russia and Ukraine. In particular, he may offer significant support to Ukraine if Russia does not agree to a peace deal. On the other hand, Niinistö asserts that Trump will certainly expect Ukraine to be flexible in terms of reaching peace.
At the same time, Niinistö does not believe that Trump's election will have an immediate effect on U.S. military aid to Ukraine.
U.S. Elections: Potential Consequences of Trump's Victory
As reported by UNIAN, Russian elites, including President Vladimir Putin, secretly congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the U.S. presidential elections. They hope that under Trump, Russia will gain an additional advantage in the war against Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the European Union anticipates the onset of a trade war with the U.S., as Trump has repeatedly promised to impose import tariffs on European goods before the elections. If this occurs, the EU will face significant economic losses.
