Currently, four NATO countries oppose Ukraine's accession to the Alliance, but U.S. President Donald Trump may influence the opponents of this decision. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelensky during a meeting with representatives of the International Media Council.
He pointed out that some states claimed that Ukraine would join NATO, but "these were false words because decades have passed, and Ukraine still has not become a NATO member. This was unfair."
According to the president, those against Ukraine's NATO membership refer to some previous agreements with the Russian Federation.
"Why did you suddenly negotiate about us without us? We are an independent country. I would like to elevate the level of respect others have for Ukraine. We are fighting for security guarantees; we want to be in NATO, and the majority of NATO countries support us," he emphasized.
Zelensky noted that Ukraine's NATO membership is not supported by four countries: the U.S., Germany, Slovakia, and Hungary.
"However, everything depends on the U.S., and if Trump is willing to see Ukraine in NATO, we will be in NATO, and everyone will be in favor. If not, we will not be in NATO," he believes.
Other statements by Zelensky
The president declared that Ukraine will never legally recognize the occupied territories as Russian, even if all its allies advocate for this.
He also advises against initiating negotiations with Putin regarding what the Kremlin leader wants and proposes.
