Leaders of European countries are debating the issue of sending peacekeeping troops to Ukraine. This conflict arose during a crisis meeting in Paris organized by French President Emmanuel Macron, according to the Financial Times.
It has been noted that European leaders are seeking to reach a consensus on how to respond to U.S. President Donald Trump's peace negotiations with Russia. Poland and Spain expressed their reluctance to send peacekeeping forces to Ukraine just hours after the United Kingdom proposed to deploy its military as part of security guarantees for Kyiv.
The publication shared that representatives from six European Union countries, the United Kingdom, and officials from NATO were present at the meeting in Paris.
France suggested discussing the creation of "security forces" that would be positioned behind the future ceasefire line in Ukraine, two officials informed journalists who were aware of the meeting's preparations.
The publication emphasized that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated at the meeting that he is ready and willing to send British troops to Ukraine if necessary. However, leaders from other countries are more hesitant.
"Currently, no one is considering the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine. Peace is still very far off, and for one reason only - Vladimir Putin," said Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk mentioned at the meeting that Poland is also not prepared to send its troops to Ukraine but promised that his country would continue to support Kyiv.
The publication added that European leaders are also planning to discuss options for increasing defense spending and the military potential of Europe, including the possibility of joint funding.
