It is indeed Russia that is responsible for the war against Ukraine. U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged this fact, reports CBS News correspondent at the White House Jennifer Jacobs.
"Russia attacked. But they had no reason to attack... This war should never have happened," she quotes Trump’s remarks.
However, in the next statement cited by the journalist, Trump begins to contradict himself.
"You know, every time I say, oh, it's not Russia's fault, I always get criticized by fake news (that's what Trump calls media that don't share his views - UNIAN). But I tell you, Biden said the wrong things. Zelensky said the wrong things. They were attacked by someone much bigger and stronger - which is bad to do, and it shouldn't be done. But Russia could have been easily talked out of this," Trump said.
The American president is convinced that Putin "wants to make a deal" for peace.
"And he doesn't have to make a deal, because if he wanted, he could have the whole country. I'm not trying to make Putin nicer or better. I'm just stating the fact that there should not have been a war," Trump stated.
Trump and the Reasons for the War in Ukraine
As UNIAN reported, earlier Donald Trump had several times in various statements placed the blame for the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Volodymyr Zelensky and Joe Biden. For instance, right after a phone call with Putin, he mentioned that "one of the reasons the war started is because Biden said Ukraine could join NATO."
After the negotiations between the Russian and U.S. delegations in Saudi Arabia, Trump remarked that "now you have leadership that allowed the war," referring to Ukraine.
Later, he posted on social media, suggesting that Zelensky just wants the "fat flow" of foreign aid to Ukraine to continue.
We also reported that recently the U.S. has been avoiding officially labeling Russia as the aggressor.
