On Tuesday, February 25, a new round of negotiations between the USA and Russia will take place in Saudi Arabia. This was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, as reported by Sky News.
While swearing in his new Secretary of Commerce, he assured that he wants to see a ceasefire and an agreement between the parties.
"I believe that President Putin and President Zelensky should meet together because we want to stop the killings of millions of people and young soldiers... I think we have a chance to reach an agreement," the politician remarked.
Trump reiterated his statement that Russia wants to make a deal. According to him, negotiations between Washington and Moscow will begin on Tuesday in Saudi Arabia.
The U.S. President also assured that an agreement on minerals with Ukraine is close to being signed. He added:
"Ukraine either signs a minerals agreement with the USA, or Kyiv will face problems."
He expressed hope for achieving an agreement on Kyiv's commitments regarding compensation to the USA in the range of $400-500 billion "in the short term."
Negotiations in Saudi Arabia - Details
On February 18, bilateral talks between the USA and Russia took place in Saudi Arabia at the level of foreign ministers. Following these talks, Putin's representatives stated that the discussions went well, with both sides "agreed to consider each other's interests." For its part, the U.S. State Department announced a "significant step forward" towards peace in Ukraine.
Subsequently, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that during the talks with Russia in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), there were no discussions about any details of a potential peace agreement, such as lifting sanctions or territorial concessions. According to him, Washington agreed to direct talks with Russia to ascertain how serious the Russians are about achieving peace.
The FT reported that Russia used the first round of negotiations with the USA in Riyadh regarding the cessation of war in Ukraine to demand the withdrawal of NATO forces from the eastern flank of the alliance.
