Currently, Donald Trump is expressing strong criticism towards Denmark, Canada, as well as Colombia, Egypt, and Jordan; however, the day will come when the U.S. will need their support.
This was emphasized by William Hague, a former British minister and member of the House of Lords, in his article for The Times.
"Using such force against allies will be a mistake when it is needed somewhere, particularly to hope for an end to the war in Ukraine. The White House may enjoy hitting a few friends, but it will require more strength than it imagines to stop a big fight," he adds.
Hague notes that allies will have to convince Trump that hard power will be necessary in Ukraine, the Persian Gulf, and the South China Sea, and it should not be directed against partner countries. In his view, Trump may underestimate the role of allies in matters of stability and security, especially in the context of global conflicts such as the war in Ukraine.
The author emphasizes that without active U.S. assistance, Europe will struggle to cope with the war on its continent. Hague points out that European armies are too small and not equipped to combat modern threats at the level of major states. He indicates that Ukraine cannot rely on ending the war without proper security guarantees, which is another reason why the U.S. should take on more commitments.
Hague also notes that a resurgence of conflict in Ukraine would be a catastrophe that could overshadow even Biden's defeat in Afghanistan. According to the British lord, Trump will soon realize that only by expanding American commitments can large wars be brought to an end.
