During the meeting of EU leaders in Brussels this week, a dispute arose between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Polish President Andrzej Duda, who were discussing support for Ukraine.

This is reported by the Financial Times. The conflict erupted over Duda's proposal to confiscate frozen Russian assets amounting to 260 billion euros to finance aid for Kyiv. The idea, backed by the US and the UK, was met with strong opposition from Germany, France, and Italy.

"You don't understand how this will affect the stability of our financial markets. You don't even use the euro!" Scholz exclaimed across the table at Duda.

The dispute centered on the assets frozen after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which are currently valued at 300 billion dollars. Most of these assets are located in EU countries. While there are calls for complete confiscation, Germany and France oppose such a move, fearing potential economic repercussions for European markets.

By the way, Poland has indeed not adopted the euro and continues to use its own currency – the zloty.

Previously, Politeka also wrote that the political situation in Germany could affect the lives of Ukrainian emigrants, of whom there are more than a million in the country.
